It's that time of year again! No, it's not time to finish your holiday shopping. Don't worry. You still have time for that. But it is time for the kids (and kids at heart) to head back to the classroom. Here are a few tips to help anyone suffering from "Summer Brain" get back in the swing of things!
- Get Organized! Okay, so you probably cleaned out last year's notebook the minute that final bell rang last Spring. If not, do it now. Don't start the new school year with last year's work. Make sure you keep anything from last year that might be helpful to you, however.

- Do your "back to school" shopping early. Having the majority of it done early will give you time to grab anything you forgot last minute.
- If your child will be starting a new school, find out if you can visit the school before classes start, so he can familiarize himself with where everything is.
- Take advantage of any opportunities to meet your kids' teachers and staff at your school. They will be an integral part in your students' success, so get to know them early on.
- Talk to your child about how she feels about the upcoming school year. It is normal to be excited but also apprehensive about what the year will bring. Remind your student that this is a new grade and a new year, and any difficulties she may have experienced last year are in the past. Encourage your child to approach you with any concerns she has as this year begins, so any issues can be resolved quickly.
- Make sure your child's school has a way to reach you. If your work or cell phone number has changed, for example, make sure you update this with the school. The school should also be aware of who is allowed to pick your child up from school. Young children should know their parents full names and a phone number.
- Arrange a back-up plan in the event that you are running late to pick up your child or have a an unexpected situation arises.
- Start the year off right by getting in the habit of completing homework assignments on time and studying for tests before you think you need to. Remember, you have an "A+" in all your classes when they begin. It's up to you to keep it!
- Have fun! Studying is important, but school is not just about the grades. Sign up for sports or other extra-curricular activities. Find friends to study with and enjoy doing all those group projects.
All of us at Inspire In-Home Tutoring wish you a great year. Hopefully following some of these back to school tips will help to make it one of your best!
